Vacuum evaporator can be a part of different lines for production of jams, confitures, jams, baby food, fruit and vegetable purees, as well as for boiling masses in various industries.

Vacuum evaporation apparatus is a sealed cylindrical container of stainless food steel, equipped with a stirring device with the drive, a heating jacket with coolant. Vacuum is created in the evaporator by means of vacuum pump. The vacuum evaporator can be a part of different lines for production of pharmaceutical products, as well as for boiling masses in different industries.

Principle of operation of the vacuum evaporator

Evaporation/concentration of solutions by boiling through conversion of a part of the solvent into steam. The resulting secondary vapor can be used as a hot medium in other vessels. Evaporation apparatuses are designed to increase the concentration of a substance in solution or to partially separate it in solid form from a supersaturated solution by evaporating the solvent. Vacuum evaporators are designed to cook or evaporate masses at a pressure below atmospheric pressure.

There are two types of vacuum evaporators used in pharmaceutical production, which differ in the way they are heated:

  • Vacuum evaporators in which the heating steam is in a steam jacket (ball vacuum evaporators);
  • Vacuum evaporators with a heating surface consisting of tubes (tube vacuum evaporators).

Multi-vessel evaporators allow a more economical use of heat due to the multiple use of steam and a reduction in the amount of evaporated water in the last vessel. Vacuum evaporators operate at a pressure below atmospheric pressure and are designed for the decomposition of massecuites. The shape of the housing depends on its design and is either cylindrical (with an enlarged top), spherical or rectangular with a semicircular lid. The heating chambers of vacuum furnaces can have different designs. The most widespread are vacuum units with suspended heating chambers, the upper and lower tube gratings of which have different configurations (conical, spherical, double-slope, etc.). Steam enters the inter-tube space of heating chambers, and the product to be boiled moves inside the tubes.

The diameter of the heating chamber in most vacuum furnace designs is smaller than the diameter of the housing, so that an annular space is created between the walls of the heating chamber and the vacuum furnace housing in which the massecuite circulates.

As in evaporators, separating devices in vacuum furnaces are used to separate product droplets from the secondary vapour. Since the product in vacuum vessels is very viscous, only inertia type separators are used, which are installed above the massecuite in the upper part of the vessel.
