A vacuum breaker is a device that protects equipment from rupture.
It consists of a cylindrical tank connected to the steam space of the apparatus, a pressure gauge pipe and a water meter. The tank is filled with water up to the branch pipe connecting the vacuum interrupter with the column.
When a vacuum is formed, air enters the column from the atmosphere through a barometric tube. At excessive pressure in the column, water from the reservoir rises through the pressure gauge pipe, forming a hydraulic seal. In the event of an increase in pressure above the permissible level, the liquid is forced out of the device, preventing an accident.
