This seal is used when it is not possible to supply the seal with a barrier fluid. Such a mechanical seal is absolutely leak-proof, but its service life is shorter than that of a double mechanical seal with a barrier fluid. In addition, this seal interacts less well with abrasive fluids and fluids that crystallize.
